No one could have been more appropriate than André Marchal to carry out a complete recording like this. Never does he accentuate the virtuoso side or the technical exploit – his sole preoccupation is finding the right, pure expression and the profound poetry of every score. It is above all in the Three Chorales that one will appreciate the purity of his style at the same time as the attention paid to registration.
Crowned by a Grand Prix du Disque when originally released, this production remains, 50 years later, an 'exemplary document, and one has trouble imagining it being equalled on either the musical or the technical levels'. Claude Rostand
