With the works recorded here, we are fully in the Slavic and Germanic choral tradition of the second half of the 19th century - otherwise said, in the heart of Romanticism. Besides the unique beauty which characterizes these songs, we find an almost perfect synthesis between text and music - in the style of a lied. The majority of the CD is devoted to Dvorak's 'Moravian Songs', largely influenced by popular melody. This is followed by Rachmaninoff's 'Six Chorales', where we can clearly hear his signature in the piano accompaniment. Closing the disc is a collection of lyrical small choral works signed by Rheinberger, composed from a series of poems praising nature. The 21 children who form the Maitrise des Bouches du Rhone are to be commended for (in addition to their musical execution of a particularly difficult program) their pronunciation of Russian, Czech and German, as they sing in the original languages.
