For almost fifteen years a n album called Electric Glide by an un-assuming chap named Gary Boyle has been a particular favourite of ours here at Naim.
Having dragged our precious few copies all over the world to hi-fi shows, teasing visitors to our demonstration rooms with the remarkable artistry and sound quality they contained, demand for this LP quickly stripped supply. There was never a substantial number made in the first place and the record company saw no good reason to continue manufacturing for the sake of a few thousand sales to music loving hi-fi afficianados.
A terrible shame, we thought, as good music which has been well recorded is difficult enough to come by at the best of times.
Not really considering ourselves to be in a position to do much about it, we continued to delight our audiences with all to brief snippets of the Boyle magic whilst making discreet enquiries behind the scenes as to the whereabouts and availability of the original master tapes.
WE struck gold. Gull entertainments Ltd still had the tapes secure in their vaults and were prepared to allow us to make a strictly limited number of discs for sale to our customers.
An opportunity not to be taken lightly, it was essential to preserve every last nuance of Electric Glide’s content for it to be worthwhile re-issuing on our recently formed Naim Label.
Characteristically, it was decided that the digital mastering was something we should look after ourselves, using specially designed and manufactured equipment, and we’re delighted to announce the results are now available to savour on compact disc.
Boyle was relatively well known for his work with the band Isotope when the album was recorded, whilst the session musicians he chose to accompany him were less familiar.
Somewhat ironically, today it’s much more likely that names such as John Giblin, Gary Moore and Simon Philips will be the ones recognized by anyone reading the sleeve notes, but despite the fact that most people have never heard of him, Gary Boyle’s Electric Glide remains a classic.
