Francois Devienne was born in Joinville on 31.10.1759 and died in the spa of Charenton near Paris on 5.09.1803. In 1779, Devienne moved to Paris, where he studied the flute with Felix Rault and bassoon. His Methode de Flute Theorique et Pratique published in 1793 has been used in the flute teaching ever since. The 6 Duets for flute and viola form on the other hand an excellent example of the Francois Devienne style. They are one of the finest and most valuable compositions written for this unusual scoring. Curiously, the viola part is almost equal to the flute, which makes Devienne a pioneer of the new chamber music-making that put a stop to a dominance of one instrument over the other, still seen in Haydn for example. All duets are laid out in two movements; they are full of subtle harmony and tuneful dialogues between the instruments. At the same time, they leave room for considerable freedom of articulation for the performers.
