Verdi's songs hold an exceptional place in his artistic output. They were written as his youthful works and at the same time were an expression of the composer's very tragic experiences; within the space of two years, Verdi lost his wife and two little children. These pieces are more arias than traditional songs. The composer himself called his songs "chamber compositions" or "romanzas". Their scale is rather slight and their accompaniment uncomplicated, characteristic of his early operas. The biggest challenge put before their performers lies in evoking experiences in music and expressing emotions and the pain of existence. Works of such an emotional charge are really rare. That may be the case why they are little well-known and not often performed, although they actually do deserve special attention.
