Sondre Bratland, best known as an eminent interpreter of traditional material, has chosen new material for his latest CD, "Kvilestein". Together with Iver Kleive as arranger and "one-man-band" on the organ and the grand piano, Bratland has recorded 15 selected hymns from our own time. Released on Kirkelig Kulturverksted's label.
In past generations the hymn book was in common use in most people's homes. Hymns were seen as literature alongside novels, short stories, songs and fairy tales. Today it is used primarily for church and religious meetings.
Within Bratland's new project, therefore, lies an ambition to contribute in bringing the hymn book back in people's homes. Bratland has chosen to give new hymns - currently known only among regular churchgoers - a subjective interpretation and to touch them from a different angle rather than in the traditional style. Hymns have been written throughout the times, but they have not always been of great interest to writers. But during the last 10-15 years many writers have again found hymns a natural form of exression.
On Sondre Bratland's new CD we find hymns by a variety of Norwegian writers, all are to be found in officially approved hymn books and several of them are already "hits" with regular churchgoers. Most songs are new, but some are traditional material from various countries. "Kvilestein" is Sondre Bratland's eighth solo album.
